African Drum Music
African drum music is one of the most vital, lively and moving styles of music and percussion, even in the 21st century. Its influence is not only heard in alternative and world music, but also in modern poular genres, such as hip hop and dance.
And really, are you surprised it’s still popular? A great joy to listen to, the rhythm of African drum music plugs straight into your spine to make you want to move. It’s no wonder, when you take a moment to consider that African drum music was originally used as a way of communication as well as playing an important role in African culture. It could represent a whole spectrum of human emotion, which made it appropriate to be part of each tradition and celebration.
Unfortunately, the power of African drumming music was recognized by early slavers, both as symbolism and a means of communicating, and consequentially forbade the use or possession of drums in slave camps. It’s only thanks to the strong spirit and wisdom of the African men and women that this form of expression continued – they just resorted to tapping out a beat on chest, arms, thighs and other surfaces available.
The range of rhythm and sound that has developed from African drumming music is matched only by the variety of the African percussion instruments that have travelled around the world.
Djembe Rhythms & Drumming
The Djembe Drum is one of the most popular African percussion instruments and is very adaptable. Even a whole room full of dancers can’t help but move to the djembe beats of a skilled djembefola (djembe master).
Djembe techniques are quite an art form on their own and a djembe player usually spends several years learning from a djembe master before becoming a djembefola themself.
Kpanlogo Drums
The kpanlogo originated from the Greater Accra Region in West Africa and is also known as a ceremonial drum. Because of its brilliant ability to produce sounds that carry over long distances, kpanlogo drumming music rhythms were frequently used as a way to communicate between tribes and family groups.
African Talking Drums
Distinctive with their hourglass shape, African Talking Drums are constructed from wood and rawhide, with the rawhide stretched over both ends. Most often, African Talking Drums are played with a stick on one side and with the hand and fingers on the other. As the name suggests, they were also widely used in communication.
African Bongos
Now here’s a drum that we’ve all heard of! Widely used in Cuban drum music – and dance music throughout the world - it’s said that the African bongo became well-known to Cubans because of the slave trade. It is usually quite short and produces a beat with a moderately high pitch.
Dun Dun Drums
Dun Dun drums, which are also known as dundun drums and dun dun duuun, are thought to originate from the Malinke area of Mali. Dun Duns come in three sizes: Kenkeni, Sangban and Dununba (ranging from smallest to largest respectively). They can be played apart from each other but are also played strapped together in groups of 2 or 3.
Ngoma Drums
To certain peoples in Uganda, Ngoma drums have a meaningful correlation as ceremonial instruments. The word ‘ngoma’ is Swahili for ‘drums’, which makes describing this particular drum a bit difficult. The name is mostly used for an group of 6 or 7 drums of different sizes strapped together and drummed as a group.
Itotele
The Itotele is a mid-sized, goblet-shaped drum that has become very well-known in Cuba. To make a duller sound, sometimes a waxy material is used on the drumhead.
As can be seen from the variety of African percussion instruments that we’ve mentioned – and the dozens more that we haven’t mentioned – African drum music is varied and is a fantastic type of artistic expression. It’s a pleasure to create, and a pleasure to listen to!
