African Tribal Drum Music: Free-Flowing Fusions Of Far-Flung Styles
It seems that, over the past 20 or 30 years, we’ve evolved from one music style taking over each new decade – 60’s and 70’s rock, 80’s pop – to gradually hearing much more variety in mainstream music.
The 90’s fused pop and rock with techno and R’n’B and, during the first decade of this bright new millennium, we’ve even heard these and other mainstream styles blend with tribal music. Rhythms and melodies that we’ve historically left to the ‘new age’ crowd are now making more obvious inroads into popular music by mixing with beats that we are more familiar with – and doing so rather successfully!
Now that tribal dance music has become readily available to a greater audience, why shouldn’t it be more popular?
Tribal drum music – as part of its very nature – has a visceral beat. African tribal drum music was used traditionally as an emotional expression, with the drum symbolizing a heartbeat that would evoke a certain frame of mind in the dancers. In the same way as it talked to tribal people dancing on the African savannah hundreds of years ago, the emotion of tribal dance music goes beyond race, ethnicity and religion, and persuades us to dance.
Side effect of the slave trade
Tribal dance music has played an important part in the evolution of many European and Western music genres. When you listen to European music styles, it does not come as a surprise that the slave trade brought together hundreds of different types of tribal dance music that quickly began to exert their influence on various music styles. Tribal drum music became an integral part of the progression of modern music styles, from rock’n’roll and jazz to techno and dance
The Jitterbug and The Twist
Dances such as The Jitterbug and The Twist were created by the joining of popular rock music and tribal beats. These catchy beats and dance moves travelled from our ears directly down to our feet without bothering to ask for permission – the only way you can stand still when they take hold of your spinal column is by nailing your feet to the floor. Even more stolid folks thought that was too painful, so they chucked the hammer and boogied their way into miniskirts and blue-suede shoes.
Contemporary tribal trance dance music
After its journey through the twentieth century, tribal dance music is no longer just a background sound in the modern music world. Recording artists such as Ariel Kalma, Adesa and Professer Trance have combined tribal dance music from far-flung places such as Australia, India, Egypt, Pakistan, Africa, Central Europe and North America with beats suggestive of rock, pop and R’n’B. For example, African voices, didgeridoos and Tibetan chants meld with smooth saxophone notes and guitar riffs to produce a scintillating sound overflowing with liveliness and movement.
As music continues to change grow, our hope is that people and nations will grow in kind.
A roadmap for the future?
The first ten years of this new millennium have been rife with both triumph and tragedy. As people all around the planet rejoice and grieve together, as we become more accepting of diverse beliefs and ways of life, hopefully we will follow in the direction that music leads – a harmonisation of mankind’s many voices into one melodic sound. The tribal music that played such an essential role of our history is now showing us a road map for the future.
