What cymbal set-up should I have for my drums?
I want to upgrade. What kinds of cymbals do you use? what sizes...thickness...all that stuff? how many cymbals too
If you're ready to upgrade to professional level cymbals you owe it to yourself to spend alot of time trying different ones out.
The best professional level cymbals are Zildjian, Sabian and Paiste.
For Zildians check out the A Series, Custom A, K Series and Custom K's. The A's are favored by rockers and the K's by jazzers.
For Sabians check out the AA, AAX, Hand Hammered and Hhx Series. The AA and AAX's are favored by rocker and the HH's by jazzers.
For Paiste check out the 2002 Series.
Play alot of them and remember that even two "identical" cymbals can sound different.
Unless your trying to achieve an escpecially unique sound the following setup will serve well in most musical situations.
14" Medium Hi-Hats
16" Thin or Medium-Thin Crash
20" Medium Ride
When expanding from there consider adding the following:
10" Splash
18" Medium-Thin or Medium Crash
18" China.
You don't have to buy them all at once. Most cymbal collections are built up over a bit of time.
Consider used cymbals as well. Cymbals are said to "mellow" with age so a brand new cymbal may sound different a year from now, while an older cymbals tends to hold its mature sound.
Buying and selling used cymbals lets your try out cymbals to see if you want them in your permanent collection. Unlike new cymbals you won't take that much of a hit, if any, when you resell them.
