For a $100 Toca djembe, is it cheaper to find a way to replace a broken head or to replace the whole drum?
I play the djembe. Recently, on the way to a gig, my djembe somehow managed to get punctured by something or other in the back of the van the band was traveling in. My question is whether it would be more efficient (cheaper, faster) to buy a new instrument or to have someone replace the head. It is a Toca Synergy Freestyle djembe (Goatskin Head) which cost me about $100 and would cost about the same to purchase a similar or identical one. I have no idea if heads are even available or where I would go to get this done. Please provide any information you might have.
You should be able to get a replacement head from any Toca dealer. They are not hard to change on this type of drum, either you should be able to do it, or any decent drum tech can. It won't be an expensive job.
Since the head may have to be ordered, you may want to buy a new drum - maybe a different size? - and order the new head at the same time. This would keep you playing & also give you a reference if you replace the old head yourself.
Also, you may want to invest in a Hard Case if you're gigging with it. I've also had heads wrecked in transit to jobs.
