Common Errors Made When Djembe Drum Playing
There has been an increase in the popularity of Hand Drums during the past several years, on the stage as well as in casual environments such as drum circles. In both scenarios, the djembe drum has proven itself to be incredibly versatile. Players often make a few common mistakes when playing this or any other type of Hand Drum.
For someone wanting only one drum that has a number of different sounds, a djembe drum is the perfect choice. Djembe drums come in a number of different styles, appealing to the specific preferences of each player. Some drums have synthetic heads and others have natural-Skin Heads. Each type of head has its own challenge. Synthetic heads can get tuned too tight, causing a lot of “ring” and overtones that you don’t want. A natural Drum Head produces a more organic tone, with very few overtones. If there's too much tension in the head, then down-tuning the drum can become a real chore. This can be avoided by tuning the head gradually, paying careful attention to the tone as you go.
Another misconception is that as the drummer you should play louder, or that the bigger drums should be played louder. It is a mistake made by many, and it is very inconsiderate. People who drum together in drum circle have a tendency to speed up as they are drumming and also get louder. It is not necessary to play the djembe as loud as possible in order to be heard.
Another issue that goes hand-in-hand with this problem is that players have a tendency to speed up as they play louder. The best way to avoid these two issues is to simply use your ears. If you are unable to hear your fellow drummers, the chances are you're playing too loud. Sometimes it helps to close your eyes to really focus, after all, it's not like the drum is going to go anywhere!
The djembe is an easy drum to play, even for someone just learning. However, just because it is easy to play doesn’t mean that the basics should be ignored. Many casual drummers have fun just banging away and don't understand how to create different sounds that drums can make, but other drummers spend time practicing the location of the basic tones and the way to beat them out with the djembe. Knowing how to create the three basic tones on the djembe drum will allow you to play it like a symphony.
