What is the difference between Snare Drum and tom heads?
I'm looking at buying a new set of drum heads. While i was looking i found something called a "batter". So i was wondering what the difference is between a snare head and a tom head. or if i could use a tom head for a snare drum?
the term "batter" head refers to the skin of the tom or snare that you hit. the opposite of that is found on the underside of the drum and is called the "resonant" head. batter heads need to be replaced rarely to often, depending on how much and how hard you play on them. the batter head nevers needs to be changed.
there are a few differences between tom and snare heads. in general, snare heads are coated and 1-ply. this means you will get a shorter sustain and you can use the coated part for different Sound Effects used often in jazz. tom heads are generally clear and can be 1 or 2-ply depending on your preference. these are meant to give the drum a longer sustain and a deeper sound. i wouldnt suggest using a tom head for a snare. just go buy a evans genera for your snare. its a cheap, durable Drum Head that a lot of drummers use for the snare. as for the toms, well you have quite a few more options.
