The Characteristics of Hip-Hop Drums
Hip-hop, a music genre which begun in 1986 has the largest variation of drum beats and sounds among all music genres. Hip-hop music of today may have originated from the elements of reggae music way back from the early 70’s. Principally, a hip-hop song is made up of two components. These are the vocals and the beats, beats being the attention of our articles.
There are 4 main characteristics of Hip-Hop drums. These are the: (1) Kick Drum sounds (2) snare sounds (3) hats (4) claps. This piece of writing will discuss exactly these characteristics one-by-one.
First are the kicks. These are the most basic and most noteworthy quality of a hip-hop tune. Kick drum beats are best made with synthesizers. Classic hip-hop music production tools like Roland 808 and Roland 909 are samples of classic hip-hop drum kits that use analog waveforms and lo bit samples for them to make best use of the capabilities to produce drum sounds.
Second of the characteristics are snare drums. The metaphor of orchestration is often the beginning for the production of snare sounds. They can be compressed, distorted, or full, depending on your preferences. After all,the sole rule about snare sounds is that these can't get in the way of the raps of a hiphop song. Also, snare sounds do not need to be a prevailing part of a hip-hop song.
Third of the four features of hip-hop songs are the hi-hat drums. Just like that of the snare sounds, either this is an electronic noise burst or full-bodied sticked hits, hats are determined by the metaphor of orchestration. Hats are usually applied every sixteenth note but it is not necessary to apply it for every eighth or sixteenth note.
Last of the characteristics are the claps. These handclaps are typically reproduced and most of the time, they will not sound like authentic hand claps at all. These claps mostly come every fourth note.
These features constitute great hip-hop music. Incorporate all four together with right groove and mix, and certainly, you are on the way to make a one big hit.
