Aimpoint Increases The Versatility Of Red Dot Sights
Over the last 35 years Aimpoint has become synonymous with high quality red dot sights. When the US Army decided to adopt a unitary power optical sight, they chose Aimpoint's CompM2 as their M68 CCO. This sight was a game changer for US Army troops in close combat, pushing up marksmanship scores and making small unit tactics more effective and lethal. The M68 won a great reputation for itself in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the US Army wanted to give its fighters an even better sight with improvements they would specify. First of all they wanted to get rid of the scarce and expensive N cell batteries for AAs with a sight capable of taking any AA battery. Secondly, to avoid canting problems, they specified an integral mount that would keep the adjusters at the right angle to the bore. Lastly, the red dot brightness adjuster switch's relative fragility had proven the Achillies heel of the original M68. In the meantime, Aimpoint had rolled out its vasty improved ACET battery life increasing circuitry technology, meaning they could not only deliver a sight, the CompM4S, that met the US Army's needs, but could provide one that could get 8 years of continuous use out of one AA lithium battery! The CompM4S, with a low profile battery housing modification requested by the US Army, entered service in 2009 as the new M68 CCO (some original CompM4 are also in service).
However, the US Army wasn't content with one aspect of the CompM4s - it's weight. The Army had started to cut out pounds from the soldiers' burden, but things had gotten so critical that now even ounces mattered. Literally anything that would reduce the load American soldiers were having to pack in the rarified atmosphere would yield huge dividends in reduced fatigue and increased combat effectiveness. As a result, US Army soldiers increasingly started to purchase their own Aimpoint Micro T-1 red dot sights. The Aimpoint Micro T-1 is a 4MOA red dot sight that, with it's built in thumb nut operated MIL STD 1913 mount only weighs 3.7 ounces. In service the thubscrew mount is often replaced with the LaRue Tactical LT660, a locking quick release mount that lifts the sight to the right height for in-service night vision systems and co-witnessing in the bottom third of the aiming window.
Recent photographs from Afghanistan show the Aimpoint Micro T-1 in un use with the Aimpoint 3xMag magnifier on the unique Aimpoint TwistMount, sometimes with the optional TwistMount Co-witnessing Spacer which puts the Aimpoint magnifier at the correct height for the Micro T1 when used with the LT660 quick release mount. The 4 MOA red dot can be a bit large for very long range shooting but the combination is very versatile and saves a lot of weight over the alternative of a CompM4 and an M150 ACOG. Some ACOGs now feature top mounted RMR or Docter Red dots for close range engagement, the T1 and 3xMag has the advantage that the red dot can be used through in line night vision in a combination that is easily co-witnessed. The T-1 can also overcome the problem of close range engagements by those equipped with long range weapons with high powered scopes. If you are equipped with a sniper or designated marksman's rifle, it is not always easy to dial down magnification to take a shot that presents itself at close range. With an offset mount, they can just tilt the rifle, take the shot and switch back to their sniper scope. Although it was never intended for military use, it is highly likely that the T-1 and 3xMag Twistmount combination will be type classified by the US Military in the near future.
