China's Emperors - The Early Years

Suiren, Fuxi and Shennong are regarded as the Three Sage Kings of ancient China who made personal sacrifices to improve the lives of the people. They are known for one or more unique contribution to mankind.

Suiren was the first and he supposedly lived about 18,000 years ago. His greatest contribution was the art of making fire by drilling wood. With this skill mankind could create fire on demand enabling mankind to eat cooked food. It also enabled mankind to keep warm and ward of wild animals.

Fuxi taught people how to domesticate animals. He also taught them to make nets to catch fish, birds and wild animals and in the process ensure the supply of food all year round. He was also responsible for creating the institution of marriage and the for a 35 string Musical Instrument. His most important contribution however was the Bagua or Eight Trigram that formed the basis for the all important I Ching or Book of changes.

Shennong greatest contribution was teaching people to farm and for inventing many farming aids. He taught the people to grow rice, wheat, beans etc and invented barter trading. He also invested a 5 strings musical instrument.

Shennong tasted hundreds of wild berries to find remedies for illnesses. He was constantly poisoned and eventually died from one that proved too much for him.

The Five Legendary Rulers, Huangdi, Zhuanxu, Diku, Yao and Shun then succeeded the Three Sage Kings.

Huangdi had strong management skills. He knows how to select the right people and motivate them to rule the country and to come out with innovations that benefit the people. Many great achievements were attributed to him.

With the help of his many talented subjects, Huangdi developed a written language for the Chinese people. He also commissioned the compilation of The Yellow Emperor's Medicine Classic which became the foundation of Chinese Medicine today. Finally we also developed a Farmer's or Chinese Solar Calendar.

Huangdi was a man of peace and did not like war. During his rule, there was peace, stablility and prosperity in his kingdom.

Zhuanxu who succeeded Huangdi was not his son. He was chosen over Huangdi's many sons because of his outstanding ability. Zhuanxu greatest contribution was to bring law and order to the people plus consolidating the power of the central authority.

Diku who succeeded Zhuanxu was a benevolent king. He was also the great grandson of Huangdi. Diku reorganized the government and created new ministries with clearly specified duties. They include the ministry of Land, Forestry, Water, Minerals and Fire. His other contribution included improving the Farmer's calendar system.

Diku's son Yao succeeded him. Like his father he was benevolent and industrious. He made some major changes to the calendar and altered the timing of planting that greatly increase the yield.

Shun succeeded Yao. Shun's mother died when he was a young boy. His step mother and father treated him badly. Despite that he remained filial to them and this virtue gained him famed. He was summoned to Yao's service at 30 and eventually married Yao's daughter.

Shun drafted the five rules of etiquette and others rules and regulations which the dukes and princes had to observed. He also divided the country into 12 states with each having its own administrator. He continued to implement changes at the administrative level and set up the department of rites, music, farming, mulberry planting, works, water and land.

After Shun comes Yu. Yu founded the Xia Dynasty and he was credited for his ability to control the floods. More on Yu in future articles.
