Tuning Plus Waxing Methods For Ski And Snowboard For Maximum Safety
Among the many challenges you face if you ski or snowboard, you have to devote a lot of attention to maintaining your equipment so it performs as it should. As seasoned winter sports athletes know, your skis and snowboards will only perform to the degree that you maintain them. Even though that's common sense thinking, it is the less experienced and more casual winter sports hobbyists who can often be at the greatest risk. We'll continue to talk about a few excellent waxing and tuning suggestions so you'll have the safest ski and snowboard experience. Also, looking for an excellent weight loss program? Be sure to check out the Insanity workout DVD by Shaun T. It's Very Good.
There are lots of excellent reasons to have a good edge and wax job on your skis. Because you can fall due to dull edges, we're talking safety here as well as performance. If you ski edges are dull, they won't be able to grip properly if you're skiing on ice. If your skis are unable to grip the snow properly, you will spend a lot of time falling and getting back up. When talking wax, it's not just about having a good wax job but it's also important to have the right wax for your conditions. Outside temperature can cause issues, as well. For example, the wrong wax can cause you to slow down if it's too cold outside. Be sure to consider all these factors when preparing to wax your skis.
It is certainly better to use hot wax, so you should know how that's done. 248 degrees is the right setting, if you have a digital iron. But it's not essential to use a digital iron. Begin at a low temperature so the wax gradually heats up and melts.
Raise the temperature slowly until you notice smoke when the iron touches the wax. Don't turn up the temperature too fast. Start to lower the setting on the iron when the wax starts to smoke, and just below this point is the right temperature. That will put your non-digital waxing iron at about 248 degrees, and you'll be ready to rock and roll with your waxing.
You are better off using a wax rated for slightly colder temperatures when waxing your skis. This is for a simple reason. Your skis will be a bit on the sticky side if you use a higher temperature condition wax in the wrong conditions. That means you won't be gliding as well, or as fast, as you hope which is very frustrating. You don't want to end up having to skate instead of ski. Applying wax to your skis is similar to ironing your clothes. You should avoid lingering one spot too long just like when ironing clothes. You don't want to produce smoke when you're doing a hot wax job. Before doing any other work with the ski, let it cool for about half an hour.
Not everybody is going to take the trouble to wax and tune their equipment, of course. Your equipment has a lot to do with how well you perform in these activities. However, how you maintain your equipment is really up to you. Applying a little wax to your bases is the minimum you should do. Probably only one outing without wax will make a believer out of you -and then don't say we didn't tell you so! Before you go, don't forget to look at our shocking Insanity reviews.
