Is it legal to ride a 250cc bike after obtaining your Massachusetts permit?
I live in MA and am going to get my motorcycle permit. With a permit, can you ride whichever power bike you like (e.g. 250cc, 500cc , 750cc) legally?
Also, I know 250cc is ideal to start, but is 500cc bike good for a beginner bike?
It isn't a matter of the size of the motor but is the bike a street legal bike? If it is street legal, you can ride it with a permit. Follow all the rules that apply for MA's permit, which are more stringent than a license.
As for the 'ideal' size bike for a beginning rider, that depends on the beginner. My husband was in his mid 40s when he got his first road bike so a 250 would not have been ideal. Are you speaking of sport bike or more of a touring style bike? You can probably get away with a larger engine if you are looking for more of a touring style bike, just because you are less likely to be out to race the bike around. My first road bike was about '73 (I think) Honda 350. It wasn't torqued for racing- it was a little full-dresser. It wasn't wheelie material where my dirt bike at 250cc was.
Whatever bike you choose, do yourself a favor and remember to dress appropriately! Wear boots and don't ride in shorts. Don't be one of the fools out there with a full-face helmet but exposed legs and chest. It makes no sense. You will get hit by bugs. You will get hit by rocks. You can burn your legs on the pipes. I've come off many bikes over the years- mostly dirt bikes- and I've never landed on my head. My legs, however, have always been affected in some way. Keep them covered!
