The Things You Have Wanted To Know About The Djembe Drum
The djembe drum is classified as a Hand Drum and unlike other types of drums it is solely played with the hands rather than a mallet or drumstick. Part of the appeal of the djembe drum is the long, rich history associated with it. A music group that has a djembe adds a new aspect that accentuates the music's beat. A few of the questions that are sometimes asked before purchasing djembe drums will be addressed in this article.
What is the definition of a Djembe drum?
Traditional Djembe drums are goblet shaped, carved from a single log and covered with Goat Skin as the drumhead. Modern version can be made out of fiberglass and might be covered with synthetic material. Each type can produce impressive sounds, no matter how advanced you are.
Which area originated the Djembe?
These drums originated from Western Africa, more specifically from Mali. The Mandika people are most associated with this style of drum. Legend says that such drams are sacred because they are inhabited by three spirits from three different beings. The first is the spirit of the tree, the second is from the animal whose hide is used on it, and the third is the spirit of the maker.
The Mandika said that they got the original djembe from djinn; which was thought to be a mythological beast. This being supposedly showed them how to make the drum and gave them knowledge of its use. For them this has created a spiritual significance.
What kinds of sounds does the Djembe drum make?
These types of drums are very versatile with the sounds that can be made using three simple hand motions. These include slap, tone and base. Striking the center of the head with the ball of the hand causes the base. That makes for a deeper, more textured sound. You create the tone by completely relaxing your fingers and using them to hit the edge of the drum The sound is higher and a bit dull. The slap is made using the same motion as the tone but the fingers are bounced off the head creating a sharp, ringing sound. By combining these movements of the hand lots of new sounds can be created, which makes this a quite versatile drum.
Can these drums be tuned?
With this type of drum, the tighter it is the better it sounds. Drums can sound flat every now and then, and the best remedy for this is to loosen the drum's supporting strings, then try pulling the strings tight to clear up the sound. Remember, stringing a goat Skin Head drum might be quite a challenge because of the large number of strings involved.
This type of drum is very simple to use and compliments other instruments very well. The versatility of the djembe makes it a good choice for anyone who is willing to give it a try.
