I have a Monitoba maple tree and the leaves have been falling off all summer?
Is the tree dying?
The Manitoba Maple or Acer negundo is quit tolerant of drought. It's unlikely that your premature leaf drop is due to a hot dry summer. Manitoba Maples have few serious diseases, but Verticillium Wilt (Verticillium albo-atrum) is a disease that does affect this tree and can cause premature leaf drop.
Symptoms of Verticillium wilt include yellowing and defoliation on a few branches to massive wilting of the entire plant. From there the edges of the leaves tend to roll inward and the foliar wilting ensues. If the plant is severely infected the foliage will turn brown. Discoloration of the vascular tissue can be seen when an infected tree branch or stem is cut longitudinally. Severe infestation can lead to serious injury or death of your tree. Check a few of your infected branches or stem for this colored streaking under the bark.
