Measurement And Installation Of Vinyl Replacement Windows
Finally it is the right time to install new windows. Place the window into the opening to gauge the fit, then take it back out, and caulk the facing of the outside blind stop where the window will sit. You don't want to caulk, only to discover the windows are too big. It's worth the extra few minutes to make sure it's going to fit. Pull up the window and place the bottom end in initially. Lift the top until it meets the outside blind stops. The window frame will hit the top of the wood frame sometimes when raised into position. Once you determine that it's going to fit, remove the new window and set it aside. Apply caulk to the external face of the blind stops. White latex painters caulk works fine. Lift the window back to where it was in the proper position. Make sure that the window is correctly positioned in the opening and then have your assistant hold it in place as you proceed to lower and raise the sashes to ensure a proper fit. Get a box of popsicle sticks and wood coffee stirrers at the grocery store. The thickness of the coffee stirrers are approximately 1/16", and the popsicle sticks are around twice as thick. The shims need to go in each of the four corners.
Then caulk the gap on both sides and along the top before installing the inside stops. I don't recommend putting any screws in the sides, but you can put one screw in the top center and one in the bottom center. Installing the shims will eliminate side-to-side movement, and the caulk on the blind stops will help keep the frame in place, so there is really no need to use any screws.
Replace the old nails with new, before the installation of inside stops. You can use a one and a quarter inch finish nail. Before installing the inside stops, scrape all old caulk off the stops. Then, while your helper holds the window in place, nail your stops back on. Install the shortest window stops first. This enables you to bend the longer stops into an adequate place between the two shorter ones. To sink the head below the surface a nail punch can get the job done. I suggest that you do the first window to this point before you go to the next if you have several windows to do. How frustrating would it be to have a helper removing the old sashes, only to discover that the windows aren't going to fit!What is the reason for this? If the first one goes in fine, then you can send your helper ahead of you to start removing old sashes. The best way to avoid the nightmare of having a bunch of new windows that won't fit is to make sure you measure correctly. Be sure that you measure the window dimensions exactly and then subtract one fourth an inch from each of the dimensions. Finish the inside by caulking the area of the inside stop where it meets the casing, and the point where the stop meets the new frame. Fill the nail holes in the inside stops with caulk to hide the nail heads. The outside needs to be completed at this point. A quality replacement window will either have a sloped frame to match the slope sill, or it will come with an insert that fits under the new frame to fill the gap created by the sloping wood sill. Lower grade windows may not come with anything to fill the gap underneath, so if you have bought one such window then you can buy some wood trim to fill the space or you can buy some flat vinyl trim that attaches to the face of the bottom of the new frame. The flat trim is available on many web sites. After covering the bottom gap, apply caulk to where the outside blind stops meet the vinyl frame and to where the bottom gap filler meets the wood sill.
